Cultural Conflict in the Classroom part 2

After doing my literature circle reading for Sara Exposito's class I have the best Paulo Freire quote to link to part one of "Other People's Children."

"I have never said, as is sometimes believed, or even suggested that lower-class children should not learn the so-called educated norm of the Portuguese language of Brazil. What I have said is that the problems of language always involve ideological questions and, along with them, questions of power. For example, if there is an 'educated norm,' it is because there is another style considered uneducated. Who identified the uneducated one as such? What I have actually said and for which I am beaten is that the educated norm should be taught to lower-class children but that in so doing it should also be stressed that

-their language is as rich and beautiful as the educated norm and that therefore they do not have to be ashamed of the way they talk;

-even so, it is fundamental that they learn the standard syntax and intonantion so that

A. they diminish the disadvantages in their struggle to live their lives;

B. they gain a fundamental tool for the fight they must wage against the injustice and discrimination targeted at them."
