Por que?

My decision to be an elementary school teacher didn't come easily. From the ages of 7 to 25, I cycled through temporary interests of becoming a writer, veterinarian, zoologist, architect, doctor, landscape architect, international businesswoman, and high school Spanish teacher. The idea of teaching planted its seed with me when I was in undergrad. I tutored middle school students in Spanish, and I taught horseback riding for the physical education department at my university. I loved doing these things, but by the time I realized I wanted to be a teacher, I was already three years deep into dual degrees in finance and Spanish. Knowing that I tended to cycle through career interests, I decided I would wait this one out. I would use my degrees to find a job in business and wait to see if my interest in teaching would subside. It didn't.

So what made me finally decide to pursue an MAT program? I moved to Portland five years ago and found a job using my business degree as an auto insurance claims adjuster. During that time, I joined Big Brothers Big Sisters and was matched with Desiree, a bubbly, one of eleven children, intuitive, incredible little girl. My rewarding time with Desiree matched with my exhaustion of working for a money-centric corporation led me to make the decision to become a teacher. I saw no other option for myself.

I am so happy to be at L & C. I am receiving an incredible education. As my confidence as a teacher builds, I get more and more excited about my career.
