I have been thinking a lot lately about all of the information that has been flying around us. I literally picture my head, with millions of tidbits of information whirling around with wings on, and my eyes are crossed. What am I supposed to grab onto? What do I want to grab onto? What do I think now, and how will that change after my first year in a classroom? I do appreciate the choices though. We can take some parts, and not others, and determine our idea of best practice. We can try things on, perse. I was talking to a friend last night (on Facebook, which is a whole different topic) who did the MAT program at Pacific. She currently teaches 4th grade in Beaverton. I told her I was reading about theorists and milestones in one class, and reading about challenging what we know from "Ed Psych 101" in another class. I am learning about Piaget, Dewey, etc. and how to use their legacy, then reading about Piaget in another class and how we should look at it more critically. What?? She wrote me back and said "that sounds about right!" And, I could just picture her smiling and laughing, since she went through the same grapple with all of this information. I must say, I really appreciate the positive attitude of our group though. Even though we are all obviously a tad bit stressed and overwhelmed, we have this "keep on truckin'" attitude about us that is motivating. I think this craziness and being pulled in different directions is good practice for our first year teaching!
I hope everyone enjoyed our workshop. We had fun planning it and really hoped you were able to walk away with something more in your relationship with either Motessori or Dewey. Thank you for the compliments, Ellie!
