Today someone said, “all the readings are starting to blur together!” I couldn’t agree more. It’s amazing how one class expands on the ideas of another. Karen Gallas emphasizes the importance of listening to children, clearly influenced by Dewey. In Arts and Creativity we act the growing of plants and numbers, connecting to Gardner’s theories of Multiple Intelligence. In Sara’s class we watched a film about the psychologist Robert Coles who explores the ideas of children’s moral and emotional lives outside of school, an obvious link to the reading we did for Zalika’s class today.
I’m starting to think about this summer as the process of making a collage—all these big ideas interwoven and building one on top the other, coming together to help us each create a unique image of how we want to teach and who we want to be as teachers. In all our classes we’re learning about ideas and techniques and I think we’re also learning about ourselves.
It will be interesting to take all this theory we’re learning and see what happens to it in the fall. Will we shelve most of it? Use it? How will it look? How do these big ideas transfer into a classroom setting? I’m curious and excited to see how this summer will change the way that I am in the classroom.
